This was my last week at HistoryMiami and my first week being the only intern.
But before I can talk about this week, I want to tell you about my 3rd Saturday:
Saturday:
On Saturday, August 3, I came in to do more surveys. I started the morning by chatting with some of the staff. The MOD (Manager on Duty) was training someone to do the same job, and I got to listen to what the MOD is responsible for. I also got to hear some of our MOD's stories about working here. After that, I got to work surveying people.
Our museum is working on fixing our elevator in the north building, so our top floor, which is our Tropical Dreams exhibit, is closed. The top floor in the south building is also closed because we are in the process of changing our exhibit there. Since these areas make up the majority of the museum, admission was free today. This is awesome because we got a lot more visitors today than usual.
I spent a lot of time in the south building today since that area got more visitors, and I got to meet some fun people. I met one of our new guides, Alvaro (a different one than before). He's from Cuba and a History major who graduated from FIU recently with his bachelor's degree. We talked a lot, and he told me about his immigration story and his love of history. I also got to hear him talk to a lot of people about the various things we have in our "It's a Miami Thing" exhibition.
I also met an Ecuadorian family. They wanted to learn how to play dominoes, and I taught them using one of our domino tables we have set out for guests to play. It was a lot of fun sharing that part of my culture with others.
Here's a picture of us playing dominoes:
