Internship Week 3 - Evelyn Garayalde - HistoryMiami Museum

This week, my third week at HistoryMiami, we really tried to focus on finishing our projects.

But first, last week:

Saturday:

I came to the museum on Saturday, July 27, to do more surveys and some research for our project. I spent the morning doing research and making a list of what we need to see in the archives since we have an appointment on Wednesday to look through them. After lunch, I started doing surveys. I really put myself out there that day. I was able to connect with some of the people who came in as well as some of my coworkers.

I talked to someone who moved to Miami unexpectedly. He came from Colombia on a visit, and due to unforeseen circumstances, he had to stay. He has lived here for two years and is still learning the language. I got the chance to practice my Spanish and have a nice conversation about Miami and its history from the eyes of a newcomer.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Raul and his two kids. They were working on a puzzle that we have set up in the museum, and after giving him the survey, he invited me to stay and help the kids with the puzzle. It was so nice to be able to help them complete the puzzle and spend time with these two incredibly smart kids. It was the best part of my day.

Here's a picture of the puzzle and the 2 little geniuses:

Now on to this week:

Monday:

On Monday, July 29, we got really focused on our projects. We made a plan and worked on a design for what our project would look like.

Wednesday:

On Wednesday, July 31, my partner and I went to the archives to do research and find photos to use for our project. We talked about the different places in Miami that have been gentrified and looked at many pictures that really surprised us and opened our eyes to the cruel realities of the people who had to suffer to make Miami what it is today.

These are some of the pictures we looked at:

After coming back from the archives, my partner and I finalized our design.

Today:

Today, Friday, August 2, was the last day for all of the other interns. We spent the morning talking and joking, and later went to a workshop about plarn. Plarn is plastic yarn used for crocheting and knitting. We had some lunch and then made plarn out of old plastic grocery bags. We then used that plarn to crochet! It was a great time to do this with my fellow interns. We had a lot of fun!

After this, we got to work finishing our projects. We printed all the text and pictures and pasted them to our boards. My partner painted the beautiful art piece that we will display with our project.

Here's a picture of us with our project:

Tomorrow:

I'll be back at the museum doing surveys on Saturday, August 3. I've come to love working here on Saturdays because I get to connect with the people who visit us. I've met a lot of interesting people here.

Goodbye:

I want to take a moment to thank all of the awesome people I've had the absolute pleasure of working with these past three weeks. I still have one week left in my internship without the rest of you, and I will definitely miss you all so much! I feel like I have gotten so close to each one of you, and I'm so grateful to have had the chance to not just meet you all, but to get to know you so well. I will treasure these memories, and I hope that you all will too. I wish you all the best getting through high school and beyond! I hope that you know I will always be a resource for you, so don't hesitate to reach out to me whenever you need anything (or even when you don't need anything and just want to talk). Thank you all so much for a great three weeks, and thank you, Lúcia, for encouraging me to participate in this internship with these amazing people!

I want to acknowledge each of you individually:

Caleb, thank you for being our jester and never failing to make me laugh. It was so great to work with you. You are so effortlessly funny and you have an amazing personality, never change. Thank you for being my partner and staying with me all those days after everyone left, to keep working, or just to joke around. It was so great getting to know you, and I could not have asked for a better partner.

Milo, getting to know you has been so great. I've loved sharing my food with you and hearing all the drama from you and Bruna. I'm sure you're an amazing singer, and I wish you nothing but the best.

Christina, the crochet queen! You are seriously so talented!! I love meeting people who are so clearly talented and love what they do. You are so funny, and your laugh is so contagious. I have loved getting to know you, and I'm so glad that we got to see that sassy side of you as we all got more comfortable with each other.

Bruna, you are such a cool person; there is no other way to describe you. You are so funny and relatable. I love that you make fun of people so freely in such a friendly way. You're never mean, you don't make people feel uncomfortable, you just get us all to laugh at ourselves.

Lúcia, last but not least, my incredible boss! Working with you has been so amazing. I truly feel like I have learned so much from you. I have been able to see how you gave us space but kept us focused and how you made us feel so comfortable. I truly feel like I can call you a friend now. I'm so grateful for the opportunity that you gave me to meet and get to know all of these amazing people and to learn from you. I admire you so much. I loved hearing your stories and getting to know you!

There are so many more people that I met working over the past three weeks, and I wish that I could acknowledge and name them all, but it would take forever. I am grateful for everyone who has been a part of my internship and has taught me something or even just taken some time to talk to me. I'm grateful to have one more week, even if it's without my friends, to continue to work at HistoryMiami.

Museum of Science & Industry - Thalia Estrada, Week 4

Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago Internship Thalia Estrada     Hey everyone! :)  It is hard to believe that four weeks have easily gone by. I got to build wonderful relationships with the staff in the MSI educational team and I also got to know the overall museum—with its many exhibits—  on a deeper level. This is what I did on my final week: This is how the museum looks from the outside. It is absolutely stunning.           To begin with the week, I got to the museum early because the office does team huddles on Monday mornings. In these huddles, the educational team speaks with the vice president and education and chief learning and community officer, Dr. Jessica Chavez. A calendar is projected onto TV where the team then discusses their latest projects and keeps the education department up to date with any events that are coming up in the week. This is also a great time for the team to ask for assistance, or make everyone a...

National Museum of Mexican Art - Citlalli Alaniz, Week 1

Week 1 (July 1-July 7)  Hi everyone! My internship started last week and I am an educational intern at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, helping with the ImaginARTE Summer Camp which is for children ages 7-12. Since summer camp started in late June, I quickly jumped in ready to help and get to know all the children. My first week consisted of 3 summer camp days and my story time session in that weekend.  Summer camp quickly became accustomed to seeing me and receiving help distributing supplies, helping them, and supervising them during recess time. The summer camp's theme is based on making individual mini-museums to showcase the different aspects and components of museums. Each week focuses on a different component, my first week's theme was all about making sculptures and creating condition reports for the children's museum. The week concluded with the children making their sculptures and them being added to a sculpture garden that was previously made. ...

Arte Americas - Mateo De Anda, Week 2/3

Last week I had a slow start with lots of research and planning. Towards the end of last week we in the programs department received a brief course on managing a classroom space, including setting up the environment, creating classroom norms and expectations and how to present to kids while maintaining their attention and interest. We also covered, more specifically, how that is accomplished reading a book. This week I got to put theory and planning to practice. Saturday, Arte Americas hosted another Bilingual Story-time event. While the reading went on, I observed the suggestions that we had learned in the training being applied effectively. Besides the usual set up process of the reading and activity spaces, this week there was also a projected video between spots that I helped with. I believe after what I learned this week I'm more than ready to host my own Storytime.  Sunday, I returned to my research. I spent most of the day contacting other organizations in the area and devel...
