Dixon Gallery & Gardens - Angela Hernandez, Week 4

Week 4
Saturday
I cant believe it’s already the last week!!Like every Saturday, I was given a list of tasks to complete for the day.Today, ai had to set up for the Taigiquan program and test out sharpies. These tasks took me most of the day, and I worked on my activity proposition project for the rest of the day.

Monday
I started and ended my day with meetings today. In the morning, the education team met to discuss future programming and exhibitions for the upcoming months. Then, the education team presented this information at an all-staff meeting. Although I knew that exhibits took a considerable time to plan, I was surprised that some won’t even take place until the winter of 2025! I’m glad I got to attend the meetings, as I learned more about the logistics and planning that goes into museums.

Tuesday
Today was filled with pickles!!The activity for today’s mini master class was to make a jar of pickles. Before the class started, I helped prep some of the supplies. I also got to try homemade pickles made by a programs coordinator. Surprisingly, I really liked it, however many others thought they were too sour. During mini masters, the participants started by reading a story about pickles and the five senses. Then, the participants transitioned into jarring their very own pickle by adding slices of pickles, water, and spices into their mini jars. The pickles take two days to be ready to eat, so we then have participants store bought pickles and pickle chips to enjoy. For many, it was their first time trying pickles, so it was very interesting to see everyone’s reaction to the taste.

Wednesday
I continued on my project proposal today by making origami to attain measurements for supplies. In the afternoon, I finally got to host the reading program! I spent an hour prepping the materials and organizing the room. Slowly, the participants arrived. I began by directing everyone to a rug to begin the story. As a preliminary question, I asked everyone if they had family that spoke Spanish. Almost immediately, a few hands shot up into the air, and many became very interested into the contents of the story. Throughout the story, many would mention spanish words they knew or heard. I was very content that the participants showed such eager interest into the bilingual aspect of the book with curiosity to learn even more. During the house activity, the same trend continued. Many of the participants eagerly asked me to write spanish words for them to use in their artwork. I could tell that the book pushed them even more into exploring different cultures and languages, and I am glad that I could take part in that through the storytelling.

Thursday
I started of the morning by working on my main activity proposition project. This project is slightly time consuming, as it is hard to find cheap products that match my vision. However, I made significant progress by culminating a list of materials that would be used for the activity. Near the end of the day, I helped set up for yoga and then returned to working on my project.

Friday
I can’t believe it’s the end. I started off the morning by attending another education meeting, which talked about supplies used in programs. I then made finishing touches to my activity proposition and presented it to my mentor. To say goodbye, the education team threw me a cookie send off, and we all ate cookies for an hour. I then cleaned up my desk and said my goodbyes. I am so glad that I was chosen to participate in this program. I left this internship with valuable tangible and intangible skills that will help me excel in the future. Thank you so much to the Dixon and NMAL for this opportunity!!!

Museum of Science & Industry - Thalia Estrada, Week 4

Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago Internship Thalia Estrada     Hey everyone! :)  It is hard to believe that four weeks have easily gone by. I got to build wonderful relationships with the staff in the MSI educational team and I also got to know the overall museum—with its many exhibits—  on a deeper level. This is what I did on my final week: This is how the museum looks from the outside. It is absolutely stunning.           To begin with the week, I got to the museum early because the office does team huddles on Monday mornings. In these huddles, the educational team speaks with the vice president and education and chief learning and community officer, Dr. Jessica Chavez. A calendar is projected onto TV where the team then discusses their latest projects and keeps the education department up to date with any events that are coming up in the week. This is also a great time for the team to ask for assistance, or make everyone a...

National Museum of Mexican Art - Citlalli Alaniz, Week 1

Week 1 (July 1-July 7)  Hi everyone! My internship started last week and I am an educational intern at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, helping with the ImaginARTE Summer Camp which is for children ages 7-12. Since summer camp started in late June, I quickly jumped in ready to help and get to know all the children. My first week consisted of 3 summer camp days and my story time session in that weekend.  Summer camp quickly became accustomed to seeing me and receiving help distributing supplies, helping them, and supervising them during recess time. The summer camp's theme is based on making individual mini-museums to showcase the different aspects and components of museums. Each week focuses on a different component, my first week's theme was all about making sculptures and creating condition reports for the children's museum. The week concluded with the children making their sculptures and them being added to a sculpture garden that was previously made. ...

Arte Americas - Mateo De Anda, Week 2/3

Last week I had a slow start with lots of research and planning. Towards the end of last week we in the programs department received a brief course on managing a classroom space, including setting up the environment, creating classroom norms and expectations and how to present to kids while maintaining their attention and interest. We also covered, more specifically, how that is accomplished reading a book. This week I got to put theory and planning to practice. Saturday, Arte Americas hosted another Bilingual Story-time event. While the reading went on, I observed the suggestions that we had learned in the training being applied effectively. Besides the usual set up process of the reading and activity spaces, this week there was also a projected video between spots that I helped with. I believe after what I learned this week I'm more than ready to host my own Storytime.  Sunday, I returned to my research. I spent most of the day contacting other organizations in the area and devel...
