By my second week at the SHC, I had gained a better understanding of the museum's inner workings. My role as an intern encompasses three departments: education, visitor engagement, and administration.
On Monday and Tuesday, I worked with kids from kindergarten to third grade in summer camp. I enjoyed interacting with little kids, teaching them about San Diego's history, and knowing that as a younger generation, they will be informed about our past as a community. We visited the San Diego Natural History Museum and learned about different species of animals such as aquatic, insect, and terrestrial.
On Wednesday and Thursday, I worked on the Chicano Park exhibition. Along with the visitor engagement team, we are working on making the exhibit easier to catch the eye of children and for them to be interested in history, and in a place that holds a big representation of San Diego. The project it is not as simple, Chicano Park has a lot of murals painted by Chicano artists. My job is to research each of the murals and artists to be more informed and for kids to understand the significance of this project.
