Phillip & Patricia Frost Museum of Science - Angeline Alvarez, week 2

Monday 7/15/2024

Today was my first day with the Exhibitions team. I started by meeting Cory, who I'll be shadowing today and tomorrow. He is in charge of coming up with ideas for the exhibitions, as well as designing the structure and contacting the vendors. After introducing ourselves to each other, he explained to me in detail what he does in a regular basis. One of those things is meeting up with potential vendors for pieces that might be needed in an exhibit. I accompanied him to a meeting with the workshop and a wall vendor named MPA. The Frost Museum bought a couples of walls some years ago. However, the crew in the workshop struggled with assembling detachable units. The MPA representative, Josh, demonstrated how they are supposed to be set up and how to take them apart. Me and the workshop crew found them very convenient, because of the low labor needed and the small area that is needed to store them.

Today's day was full of surprises. After I arrive at the museum, I met with Cory, and he told me we were going to be working in reviewing some videos for the incoming exhibit. We spend approximately 2 hours reviewing the video quality, subtitles, lighting and font type in 8 videos. When we finished reviewing the videos I help Cory with another of his projects, in which I transformed into a video editor! I was very nervous because it was my first editing a video, but Cory patiently taught me how to edit audio, synchronize it precisely, and even add music.  I found it very interesting and might explore it further for fun in the future!

Designing an exhibit with Cory (one of the many projects I helped in)

My day was divided into two sections. In the morning, I met with the workshop crew, they are the responsible of setting up the exhibits and making sure that everything in the current exhibits is working correctly. I helped them paint the back of a photobooth that was going to be use in an event that museum was going to have in two days. After that I walked with them throughout the museum to check the exhibits.

When I finish my lunch, I met with Helen, who is the director of the exhibits, with her I discussed and helped her come up with ideas for her master plan. This master plan is something that the museum has been thinking of during a long time to improve in a lot of areas, so being part of the thinking process was an amazing experience.
I painted that with Micah!

Evelyn and I attended our Storytime session.

After that we got ice-cream with Chloe and Vanessa.

The ice-cream was delicious!

In my last day I helped the collections department. Kristen, who is the collections assistant explained to me what her job is and also some challenges that have stopped her momentarily, like a very small storage room for collections. Around noon, we inspected artifacts throughout the museum, focusing particularly on dinosaur fossils in 'The Dig' exhibit. Kristen emphasized the importance of monitoring conditions like temperature and humidity to prevent issues like Pyrite Disease, which can deteriorate fossils. At the end of the day, she showed me the collections room.

Phillip & Patricia Frost Museum of Science - Angeline Alvarez, week 3

Yesterday marked the end of my third week. I have no words to describe how awesome this week was. For the first time, I was exposed constantly to something that I am very passionate about: nature and animals. To explain what I did this week, I will explain the layout of the museum and the tasks that I did/helped. At the Frost Museum, we have five floors, each floor has a different exhibits and animals. This week I will focus on the animal side.  5th Floor We have the WetLab, which is a research room, where we grow corals and test the conditions of every tank in the museum. In here I spent some time helping Natalia feed the Pilar Corals, which are extinct in the wild.  4th Floor  On this floor we can find "The Vista", which is a combination of various marine habitats. We have an aviary, which focuses on the beach and mangrove habitats with different fish like tarpon, and birds like spoonbills. There is also a Stingray touch exhibit and the Gulf Stream exhibit, in whe...

Museum of History, Anthropology, and Art of the University of Puerto Rico - Andrea Mercado-Cruz, Week 1

Week #1 - Internship Blog Museum of History, Anthropology, and Art of the University of Puerto Rico by Andrea Mercado-Cruz (YAP 2024) This was my first week working at the Museo de Historia, Antropología y Arte (Museo UPRRP) in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico! So far, it has been a fantastic experience, allowing me to engage in various activities at the museum and see the behind-the-scenes of museum operations. To begin with, I had the opportunity to research different artworks in the museum's exhibit, "24 años de donaciones al museo." On Monday, my lovely supervisor, Lisa, gave me a tour and explained the history behind some of the pieces, enhancing my knowledge of Puerto Rican history and culture. During the tour, she suggested I focus on four specific works ranging from paintings and wood prints to posters and artifacts. These four works will be the focus of the short paper I'm writing about the artistic representation of Puerto Rican nationalism and colonialism in the...

El Paso Museum of History -Jimena Huante -Week 3

This past week has been incredibly eventful, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the diverse range of community events. The week kicked off with the dynamic Beat Builders DJ summer camp, where the campers delved into the art of DJing against the backdrop of our Musica sin Fronteras exhibit. I had the privilege of preparing for the campers' arrival and being fully immersed in the camp's activities throughout its duration. The highlight for many was the presence of the renowned DJ Johnny Kage, a familiar face in El Paso's DJ scene. His expertise and amiable personality left a lasting impression on all of us. It was fascinating to hear about his journey, which began at the young age of 15 in Ciudad Juarez, where he honed his skills using records cassettes and CDs. The camp also provided an opportunity to explore the origins of House, Techno, and Disco music, shedding light on their historical significance. The week also included an exclusive preview of La Nube...
