Oregon Museum of Science and Industry- Natalia Somma Tang, Week 3

Week 3 was a busy one as the Teen Tech Center was filled with many students from various groups during the week! Much of my formal work on the Open House was simply continuing to build the relationships with community-based organizations throughout the week. I had Zoom meetings with representatives from four different groups, including Adelante Mujeres, a Latina-serving organization that has youth programming focused on keeping Latina women in school, and Hacienda CDC, which promotes Latino small businesses and provides other community support through youth and family programs.

I wanted to highlight some of the amazing work that the partner organizations I have been working with are doing. Adelante Mujeres, which translates to ‘women rise up,’ is a grassroots organization that seeks to uplift and empower Latina women through educational and leadership development programs. They encourage Latinas to engage with education, entrepreneurship, and leadership and have a special youth program called Chicas, which guides Latina adolescents through high school and even college! Hacienda Community Development Corporation (CDC) is a nonprofit organization that concentrates on providing affordable housing, youth and family services, and resident services to low-income communities, primarily in the Portland area. Its mission is to revitalize neighborhoods and improve the quality of life for residents by creating and preserving affordable housing, offering educational support and resources to youth and families, and enhancing the overall quality of life through community engagement and advocacy efforts.

The individuals from both organizations have been incredibly communicative and kind, and I am very excited to have them tabling at the open house on Friday. In total, we have 5 total organizations tabling, 4 of which serve the Latino community in Oregon and 1 that focuses on youth generally. In the meantime, I have been planning the details of the event. This includes drafting signage for the event in English and Spanish alongside my new co-worker, Rubby, exploring the TTC space to understand layout and the structure of the open house, finalizing the ticketing website, and distributing fliers!

When I’m not working on planning the event, I spend time in the Teen Tech Center working with and helping the students that come into the center! I’ve gotten to work with a bunch of teens working on some really cool projects, including 3D printing, modular origami, and sticker making!

The last week of the internship will be very busy for me, as the open house event takes place on the second-to-last day of my time here at OMSI! I am working on getting everything set up and finalized– throughout this process, I’ve learned just how much planning and coordination is required for just one event. It’s definitely been eye opening to see how much effort goes into building an effective and fun community event. I’m excited for my last week and hope that the Open House goes well!

Museum of Science & Industry - Thalia Estrada, Week 4

Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago Internship Thalia Estrada     Hey everyone! :)  It is hard to believe that four weeks have easily gone by. I got to build wonderful relationships with the staff in the MSI educational team and I also got to know the overall museum—with its many exhibits—  on a deeper level. This is what I did on my final week: This is how the museum looks from the outside. It is absolutely stunning.           To begin with the week, I got to the museum early because the office does team huddles on Monday mornings. In these huddles, the educational team speaks with the vice president and education and chief learning and community officer, Dr. Jessica Chavez. A calendar is projected onto TV where the team then discusses their latest projects and keeps the education department up to date with any events that are coming up in the week. This is also a great time for the team to ask for assistance, or make everyone a...

National Museum of Mexican Art - Citlalli Alaniz, Week 1

Week 1 (July 1-July 7)  Hi everyone! My internship started last week and I am an educational intern at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, helping with the ImaginARTE Summer Camp which is for children ages 7-12. Since summer camp started in late June, I quickly jumped in ready to help and get to know all the children. My first week consisted of 3 summer camp days and my story time session in that weekend.  Summer camp quickly became accustomed to seeing me and receiving help distributing supplies, helping them, and supervising them during recess time. The summer camp's theme is based on making individual mini-museums to showcase the different aspects and components of museums. Each week focuses on a different component, my first week's theme was all about making sculptures and creating condition reports for the children's museum. The week concluded with the children making their sculptures and them being added to a sculpture garden that was previously made. ...

Arte Americas - Mateo De Anda, Week 2/3

Last week I had a slow start with lots of research and planning. Towards the end of last week we in the programs department received a brief course on managing a classroom space, including setting up the environment, creating classroom norms and expectations and how to present to kids while maintaining their attention and interest. We also covered, more specifically, how that is accomplished reading a book. This week I got to put theory and planning to practice. Saturday, Arte Americas hosted another Bilingual Story-time event. While the reading went on, I observed the suggestions that we had learned in the training being applied effectively. Besides the usual set up process of the reading and activity spaces, this week there was also a projected video between spots that I helped with. I believe after what I learned this week I'm more than ready to host my own Storytime.  Sunday, I returned to my research. I spent most of the day contacting other organizations in the area and devel...
