National Hispanic Cultural Center - Gianna Ramirez Week 3

As my third week at the National Hispanic Cultural Center comes to a close, the Torreón project that I have been assigned has continued to evolve.

Due to some scheduling conflicts, I was only at the NHCC for three days this week. On Monday, I began extracting text from various PDF files and adding them to documents for future editing. While a super lengthy process, its important as the text I extract and the edits made to the text will be sent to the digital designers of Ideum; they will use that information to create the Torreón's digital interactive board.  This is just one component of the project as me and my supervisor work to update the descriptions of iconography within the fresco.

In between extracting text and organizing other materials about the content of the fresco, I continued to do research on mestizaje and brainstorm ways we could use the Ideum board. After meeting with my supervisor, there are various things we think would be important and engaging for visitors.  We want to create an interactive map for users to visually see where different historical figures or items in the fresco come from. We also want to create an "untold stories" section on the Ideum. While the fresco is incredible, there are certain perceives and stories important to mestizaje that are not included. This section would allow there to be exploration and deeper discussion on other important figures within what mestizaje is.

On Wednesday, before I jumped back into research, I had the Albuquerque Story Time! The story time was at the South Valley Public Library. I arrived early and met some of the staff while I prepared for the arrival of the families. There were 8 participants and a few NHCC staff members that came to support me! While being a small group of kids, it went really well and I enjoyed not only getting to read the story, but also engage with them through the craft interactives.

Today, the air conditioner in my internship's building was broken. With how hot it has been outside, my supervisor did not want us to roast within the adobe building. Instead, I was sent to explore the University of New Mexico's Zimmerman library. The goal of my library exploration was to find some research pertaining to historical figures whose descriptions we may want to edit before sending to the Ideum team. Using the catalog searcher, I sifted through academic journals and other articles, taking notes of the important details I found. This process was amazing practice for research I will have to do in college. I really enjoyed getting to use my University's library and get some advice from the librarian on how to best search for materials.

Before the end of my time today, my supervisor and I met up at a locally owned coffee shop called Slow Burn Coffee. There environment inside was aesthetically pleasing and perfect for us to quickly meet before the week came to an end. During this time, we went over the research I had gathered and planned out the nest steps needed for the Torreón project.

All in all this week was busy but really fulfilling as I got to engage with the Abq community and continue making progress on the Torreón project!

Museum of Science & Industry - Thalia Estrada, Week 4

Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago Internship Thalia Estrada     Hey everyone! :)  It is hard to believe that four weeks have easily gone by. I got to build wonderful relationships with the staff in the MSI educational team and I also got to know the overall museum—with its many exhibits—  on a deeper level. This is what I did on my final week: This is how the museum looks from the outside. It is absolutely stunning.           To begin with the week, I got to the museum early because the office does team huddles on Monday mornings. In these huddles, the educational team speaks with the vice president and education and chief learning and community officer, Dr. Jessica Chavez. A calendar is projected onto TV where the team then discusses their latest projects and keeps the education department up to date with any events that are coming up in the week. This is also a great time for the team to ask for assistance, or make everyone a...

National Museum of Mexican Art - Citlalli Alaniz, Week 1

Week 1 (July 1-July 7)  Hi everyone! My internship started last week and I am an educational intern at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, helping with the ImaginARTE Summer Camp which is for children ages 7-12. Since summer camp started in late June, I quickly jumped in ready to help and get to know all the children. My first week consisted of 3 summer camp days and my story time session in that weekend.  Summer camp quickly became accustomed to seeing me and receiving help distributing supplies, helping them, and supervising them during recess time. The summer camp's theme is based on making individual mini-museums to showcase the different aspects and components of museums. Each week focuses on a different component, my first week's theme was all about making sculptures and creating condition reports for the children's museum. The week concluded with the children making their sculptures and them being added to a sculpture garden that was previously made. ...

Arte Americas - Mateo De Anda, Week 2/3

Last week I had a slow start with lots of research and planning. Towards the end of last week we in the programs department received a brief course on managing a classroom space, including setting up the environment, creating classroom norms and expectations and how to present to kids while maintaining their attention and interest. We also covered, more specifically, how that is accomplished reading a book. This week I got to put theory and planning to practice. Saturday, Arte Americas hosted another Bilingual Story-time event. While the reading went on, I observed the suggestions that we had learned in the training being applied effectively. Besides the usual set up process of the reading and activity spaces, this week there was also a projected video between spots that I helped with. I believe after what I learned this week I'm more than ready to host my own Storytime.  Sunday, I returned to my research. I spent most of the day contacting other organizations in the area and devel...
