Week 3 at IMAS was extremely fun for me 🌸 It was very satisfying to see a full week of summer camps completed, and continue to work on my Smithsonian project. As well as working with my coworkers on an education department art exhibit that will be put up next week. I also learned more about museum procedures and that I will be featured in the official museum Mussette!
On Monday the two art activities where still life painting and glass stained replicas. The process for these two activities included different materials such as graphite sticks and pencils, black artists tape and shiny plastic multicolored paper. We instructed campers to sketch out different objects placed in front of them, and they even had the chance to sketch a small structure they themselves built from interactive blocks.
On Tuesday The main activity of the day was 3-D mask making! Campers started off with a plain white mask to start, and began sketching ideas on a paper. Then they used a combination of paper mache, tape cardboard, paint and other materials, and finished making their own paper mache masks! Some kids finished quicker than others but all kids where able to complete their mask in the allocated time.
On Wednesday We took campers out to the art galleries where they got to explore the spaces and ask questions on pieces they didn’t understand. The kids all enjoyed how colorful our quilt exhibitions are and came back to the classroom ready to make art! The two activities where a group smear painting activity and free drawing.
On Thursday we took the campers to the “biozone” a science and animal area funded by a local library where visitors can interact up close with animals and complete biology based creative activities. The campers enjoyed learning about STEM while having fun. The two activities were yarn painting and acrylic on canvas. After the daily camp activities were over me and my coworkers helped to mound some artworks for the upcoming exhibition
On Friday The two activities where kinetic sculptures and magazine collages. I also got to continue working on my project. Which is creating a kid friendly survey for our campers ages 8-12. We also used today to let the kids Finnish any artworks they worked on through the week. The kids where a little sad to say goodbye but thankfully a local library ordered them pizza as a final farewell. Afterwards I helped with museum closing routines such as shutting off interactive spaces and cleaning up some education areas.
On Saturday I got to be behind the scenes a little more, while my coworkers worked in the education spaces such as our galleries and biozone, I shadowed my coworker for a few hours while she prepared some lesson plans for the week. At 1:00pm I assisted in the galleries for a while which was cool because I got to see our curators add more sculptures/ pieces in a new exhibit. Then I continued to work on my project in the education office alongside my coworkers.
