Week Two

Saturday 7/13
My second week at the Dixon began on a Saturday. I spent most of the day prepping for activities, which I learned will be abundant this week. The programs at the Dixon usually revolve around one theme, and this week it is gardening. Throughout the day, I set up supplies and made example art work. Near the afternoon, I helped with the “Project Grow” program, which is a pop up art project for children. Going along with the theme of nature, the activity for today was making cicada prints. This taste of nature has made me greatly excited for the rest of the week!
Monday 7/15
Before the activities for the day commenced, I was able to tour the newly open exhibit “Southern Modern” which highlights the artistic interpretations of the South during the early 1900s to the mid-1950s. This tour instilled a profound understanding of the artwork by detailing the history of some pieces and artists.
Tuesday 7/16
As my second week continued, the activities and programs picked up the pace. This morning I helped with the Mini Masters program once again. As I mentioned previously, the theme for this week is gardening. In accordance, the attendees were making planters out of milk cartons. The attendees were particularly entranced by this activity, and the program ran very smoothly.
Wednesday 7/17
I had a very packed schedule today. During the morning the Dixon hosted a sports camp of around 70 campers. The campers rotated through three groups, and I helped with the activity portion. Unlike the other activities for the week, this one revolved around the symbols and self reflection in the paintings of southern artist Eldzier Cortor. After the campers left, I helped with and attended this weeks Munch and Learn. The topic for this week was the Wilson Fellowship, in which four artists traveled to the farm based town of Wilson to engage with the community and create art. After the lecture ended, the planters returned once again for K Club. The attendees enjoyed creating their planters, and the project was an overall success.
Thursday7/18
I began the day today by helping with a mosaic workshop for pre teens, in which the attendees decorated pots to create mosaics. This workshop requires two days, however I am off tomorrow. I hope to see the finished results on Saturday.Near the evening time, I helped set up yoga. Then, I worked on my new assignment of creating signs for programs. Many times people have trouble in moving around the museum, so signs will definitely be a big help.
This week has been busy and so insightful. I cannot wait to gain new knowledge as this internship continues.
