Week One
Monday 7/8
As it is the beginning of the internship, today served as an introduction to the museum and projects I will contribute to. Since the museum is closed on Mondays, I fully focused my time on adjusting myself to the museum's environment and setting up my computer. Near the end of the day, I was able to look through an upcoming exhibition, On Paper!, which details the varying roles of paper in our day-to-day lives. Throughout this week, I will help in preparing this exhibition for its opening on Saturday. I am glad the day was filled with tranquility, as it greatly aided me in transitioning into the museum world.
Tuesday 7/9
Today I was thrown into the Art educator aspect of museums by helping with the "Mini Masters" program. Admittedly, I was slightly nervous as the age range was 2-4 years old, and I have very minimal experience with toddlers. Fortunately, the children were very engaged in their activity and the program was a breeze. After the program concluded, I cleaned up the materials that were used and picked up the excess paper. I ended my day by cutting pieces of plantable paper, which will be given out during the On Paper!
exhibition.
Wednesday 7/10
I began work today in perfect time to set up and attend a "Munch and Learn" with garden master Dr.Chris Cooper. Dr.Cooper tied in many biological concepts into his presentation, such as natural resources and the complexity of ecosystems, which I found deeply intriguing. I am grateful that my museum leans heavily into horticulture, as I can intersect nature and art . After the lunch, I once again returned to cutting paper. Fortunately, I seem to have become more proficient in this task, as I can cut more in less time. Additionally, similar to yesterday, I once again participated in the art educator aspect of museum by helping with "K Club." This program had a slightly older age range of 5-9 years old, so the project was more complex- replicating china pottery. The attendees completely mastered the task by creating masterpieces. I am glad I am able to experiment art education with different age ranges, as it is a different experience every time.
Thursday 7/11
My "work schedule" runs from Saturday- Thursday, so today is my last day working for this week. I began my morning by cutting strips of paper for an activity, which took me around two hours. I do not have an eye for precision, so, this task took delicate attention and time. Towards the end of the afternoon, I began setting up for Yoga. This proved to be a relaxing end of the day, as the yoga took place in the serene greenery of the museum's gardens.
I have so far greatly enjoyed my time interning, and I cannot wait for what is to come!
