Arizona State University Art Museum - Cailinn Allen - Week 1
My first week at the ASUAM I familiarized myself with the space and its affiliate spaces. I spent the bulk of my time helping with research and side projects.
On Monday, I toured the main facility and helped with the curatorial design of furniture and sign placement for the museums two new exhibits: Spiraling, Twisting, Unraveling: Explorations in Pattern and Form and Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center's Collection 1980 - 2010. Both exhibits have their soft-opening on Saturday, July 13th!
On Tuesday, I worked on site of the Ceramic Research Center (CRC) and saw the open-storage collection, which allows for 6<% of the collection to be displayed at all times - double what is traditionally displayed for ceramic institutions. I toured the CRC Archives, and began looking through Susan Peterson's copious files for photos of Dorothy Torivio, an Acoma Pueblo ceramicist whose work is featured in Spiraling, Twisting, Unraveling.
On Thursday, most of the office went to the Tempe Center for the Art's 2024 Artists in Residency Showcase. Here, we were able to directly engage with artist's work and their journeys in the residency. Being a public university-funded museum, it was interesting to see a city-funded program and their respective utilities.
